On April 2, 1912, the Titanic was finished being built. The keel and hull were completed on May 13, 1911, but workers needed another year to install the engines and funnels and finish the interior.

In all, construction of the Titanic, which began on March 31, 1909, took over three years to complete. At 25 stories high and weighing 46,000 tons, the Titanic was everything that White Star Line Chairman J. Bruce Ismay had envisioned when he greenlighted the design and construction of the Olympic class of ships. In response to rival company Cunard’s 1907 launch of the Mauritania and the Lusitania, which became the fastest passenger ships in service, Ismay was determined to outdo the competition by building ships of tremendous size and luxury.
