The RMS Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England on April 10, 1912. It sailed to Cherbourg, France and then to Queenstown, Ireland before setting out for New York on April 11, 1912 with more than 2,200 people aboard the ship.
The Titanic began receiving messages on April 14 about icebergs in the area. At 11:40 p.m., an iceberg was spotted by lookouts on the ship, who sounded a warning to the bridge. Less than a minute later, the ship's starboard side came in contact with the iceberg. Less than 3 hours later, the ship that had taken almost 3 years to build had broken in half and had sunk into the ocean.
