The Titanic set sail for New York from the White Star Dock in Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912. Most of her crew also came from or lived in the area.
The White Star Dock, which was renamed Ocean Dock in 1911, was a deep water dock. The Titanic left from Berth 44.
The White Star Line had relocated their transatlantic operations from Liverpool to Southampton in 1907, establishing the city as England's most important passenger port. At the time of the Titanic's departure, Southampton's economy was flourishing and the port had 23 steamship companies in operation. Some of these were crucially important, such as Royal Mail, Union Castle and American Lines.
