The Titanic originally set sail from Southampton, England, at noon on April 10, 1912. The ship traveled to Cherbourg, France, stopping only briefly that evening before leaving for Queenstown, Ireland. At 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11, the Titanic left Ireland on its transatlantic voyage.
The Titanic made its final departure for New York on its maiden voyage with more than 2,200 passengers and crew aboard the ship. At 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, lookouts spotted an iceberg nearby, and 37 seconds later, the Titanic collided with it and quickly began to take on water. At 2:18 a.m. on Monday, April 15, the ship broke in half. Two minutes later, the ship that had been hailed as "unsinkable" was gone.
