The RMS Titanic was en route from Southampton, England to New York City in the United States when it struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912. The sinking occurred about 400 miles south of the coast of Newfoundland.
The sinking of the Titanic occurred on her maiden voyage. The ship was launched on April 10, 1912, and was in service a mere five days before striking an iceberg late on April 14. The ship managed to stay afloat for about two and a half hours after the incident, enough for some of the passengers to escape in lifeboats, but the lack of adequate lifeboats doomed more than 1,500 of the people aboard.
