Topiramate is an anti-epileptic drug that prevents seizures, according to WebMD. It also prevents migraine headaches for some patients, but it does not help a migraine once one occurs. Topiramate is the generic form of brand-name Topamax.
Topiramate comes in pill form and as a capsule that can be opened and the contents sprinkled onto food, according to MedlinePlus. The pills should be swallowed whole, not crushed or chewed.
As an anti-convulsant, topiramate affects brain chemicals to reduce the frequency of seizures and migraines, according to Drugs.com. As with any medication, if side effects develop, such as hives or difficulty breathing, consult a physician immediately.
