To treat dermatitis in a dog, remove the irritant causing the condition, and apply a topical appointment, such as a triple antibiotic. You need a topical antibiotic ointment, an anti-itch solution and a specially formulated shampoo. These items should be prescribed by a veterinarian.
- Remove the cause
Inspect your dog's skin for irritants such as fleas, dust mites, seborrhea or pyoderma. Inspect new accessories recently introduced to the pet, such as a flea collar, a plastic food dish or a bed, as these may be possible causes of the irritation. Treat or remove the irritant from the home. Wipe your dog's coat with a damp towel after walks and trips outside to remove outside allergens.
- Apply an antibiotic ointment to treat the condition
Call your veterinarian, and make an appointment to see him. Discuss prescribing a topical antibiotic ointment, such as a triple antibiotic, for your dog. Apply the ointment to the affected area as instructed by your veterinarian.
- Reduce irritation
Discuss the best solution to prescribe to reduce itching and inflammation, such as an antihistamine, a corticosteroid or a solution that contains hydrocortisone. Apply the solution to the affected area per your veterinarian's instructions.
- Restore the coat
Ask your veterinarian to prescribe a specially formulated shampoo to restore the appearance and overall health of your dog's coat. Wash your dog with the shampoo per your veterinarian's instructions.
