Birth control pills and surgery are treatments for noncancerous cysts, while a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are treatment options for cancerous cysts, notes WebMD. Most doctors delay treating uterine cysts because many eventually resolve without treatment.

Doctors sometimes prescribe birth control pills to ease the pain associated with noncancerous cysts, according to WebMD. Birth control pills reduce the risk of new cysts forming because they prevent ovulation.

Doctors use surgery to remove persistent or painful uterine cysts. Laparoscopy is a type of surgery that uses a small, lighted instrument to remove the cysts through a tiny incision in the abdomen, explains WebMD. Laparoscopy is effective for small cysts and cancerous ovarian tumors. Doctors use laparotomy, which requires a larger incision, to remove as much bulk as possible from larger cysts. The doctor may also remove the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes or lymph nodes during the removal of cancerous cysts if the cancer has spread.
