Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation are used to treat stomach cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Depending on the circumstances, some patients may be treated with a combination of these treatments.
Stomach cancer at stages 0, 1, 2 and 3 are usually treated with surgery though chemotherapy may be used to shrink the cancer before surgery is performed, explains the American Cancer Society. In stage 4, stomach cancer has spread, so a cure is unlikely, but treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and targeting therapy are often used to shrink the tumors and make the patient more comfortable. Recurrent stomach cancer is often treated as stage 4.
