Treatments for knee tendon pain include limiting sports activities, resting, icing and elevating the knee, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Taking aspirin or ibuprofen relieves pain and reduces swelling, and strengthening and stretching exercises also aid recovery.
Other treatments include using a strap to relieve pain by applying pressure to the patellar tendon, diverting force from the tendon and directing it through the strap. Iontophoresis treatment involves a therapist spreading a corticosteroid medicine on the patient's skin and using equipment that administers a low electrical charge to push the medication through the skin, according to Mayo Clinic. A partially torn tendon may require a cast, while complete tears or very severe injuries require surgery, notes the NIAMS.
