When do you trim perennial hibiscus plants?

Trim perennial hibiscus plants after a blooming cycle is complete. Cut the plant stems down to the ground in the winter or very early spring to allow new shoots to grow in by mid-spring.

Extensive pruning is generally not needed for healthy perennial hibiscus plants, but periodic pruning keeps them blooming for as long as possible. Prune off dead branches and blooms in the fall, then cover the roots with mulch to prepare the plant for growth the following spring. When cutting, take off about one-third of the branch and leave two or three leaf nodes to allow for strong new growth.
