What is a triple Irish chain quilt?

The Irish chain quilt is a simple design consisting of simple squares and strips that any beginning quilter can make. The quilt layout is made with single-, double- or triple-chain blocks.
An single Irish chain quilt typically uses two contrasting fabric colors so that the chain pattern is apparent when the blocks are sewn together. To make a triple Irish chain quilt, four contrasting fabrics are needed – three fabrics for the chains and one fabric for the background.
Irish chain quilts were popular in the U.S. during the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern quilters still make Irish chain quilts, using the large background areas to showcase their quilting or appliqué skills.
