The Chunnel, formally known as the Channel Tunnel, connects the countries of Great Britain and France. More specifically, it links Folkestone, Kent, with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais, via the Strait of Dover underneath the English Channel. The Chunnel is a rail tunnel that is 50.5 kilometers, or 31.4 miles, long.

Construction of the Channel Tunnel began in France in June 1988 after the Treaty of Canterbury had been signed. The Chunnel was formally opened in May 1994 by Queen Elizabeth II and became open to the public later that same year. The first ideas for a railway tunnel connecting Great Britain and France were first proposed in the early 1800s.
