The Dead Sea, located between Israel and Jordan, is a salt lake 1,300 feet below sea level. The northeast shores of this lake are located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, this body of water was named the Dead Sea because the salinity of the water is so high that fish that cannot live in it. Since prehistoric times, it has been a source of salt and naptha. Archaeological finds here include the Dead Sea Scrolls and towns reputed to be Sodom and Gomorrah. Because of its location on the often dangerous Israel-West Bank border, however, its banks are mostly deserted, and there are few visitors other than archaeologists and tour groups.
