One type of the African lily is the Agapanthus africanus africanus. This Aftican lily has open-faced flowers in colors ranging from light to a deep blue.

Agapanthus africanus africanus is a subspecies of the African lily. It is an evergreen perennial and is often used as an ornamental plant. This particular subspecies is differentiated from others by the open-face shape of the flowers. Most other subtypes of the African lily have trumpet-shaped flowers. It is also usually pollinated by carpenter bees, while the other subspecies is pollinated by the orange-breasted sunbird. In general, the African lily is a hardy plant that requires full-sun exposure and well-drained soil. When compared to other Agapanthus species, it requires skilled cultivation, and it is rarely collected from the wild with the intention of cultivation.
