What is an African antelope called?

An African antelope is referred to as an oryx. The oryx is a large antelope that is 47 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 250 and 390 pounds. The oryx can live up to 20 years.

There are two species of oryx: the beisa oryx and the fringe-eared oryx. The beisa oryx is found in Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda and Kenya. The fringe-eared oryx makes its home in Uganda and Kenya. The oryx was also found throughout all of Africa at one time. The horns of the oryx are 30 inches long, and females typically have larger horns than males. The oryx is herbivorous and prefers various grasses, leafy plants, melons, shrubs and roots. The most common predators include lions and hyenas.
