A male antelope is called a buck. A female antelope is called a doe. Both males and females grow to be as much as 5 feet tall and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Newborn antelopes only weigh about 7 pounds. Antelopes live from 10 to 25 years.
There are 91 species of antelope, most of which are indigenous to Africa. Antelope that live in forests, woodlands or bush tend to be sedentary, but antelope living in grasslands often migrate long distances. Antelopes travel in groups called herds. They can run up to 70 miles per hour, which is helpful for outrunning their predators, which include lions, cheetahs and crocodiles. They are herbivores and mainly eat grass, shoots and seeds.
