"Bruin" was the name of the bear character in the tales of Reynard the Fox, which were popular in the Middle Ages. It can refer to any bear but is best applied to the European brown bear.
"Bruin" is from a Middle Dutch word meaning "the brown one" and refers to the animal's normal color. The term is seldom used today to describe the actual animal. The name is used for the mascot of the University of California, Los Angeles and as the symbol of the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. In the popular Berenstain Bears series of children's books, Lizzie Bruin is the best friend of Sister Bear.
