What type of cars are typically available for under $1,000?

Older cars and vehicles with high mileage make up the bulk of cars available for less than $1,000, as of 2015. However, this does not mean a person can't get a decent car within that price range.

Toyotas are well-known for their reliability, even after 20-plus years on the road and over 200,000 miles. Hondas are also trustworthy cars well past a double-digit age and six-figure mileage. Kias do not have great trade-in value, so buyers can get a deal on a used model from a private seller who either no longer needs the vehicle or knows he can get more through a private sale than as a trade-in at a dealership.
