As of 2014, Visa credit cards accounted for 36 percent of all U.S. credit cards issued, according to data compiled by the Statistic Brain Research Institute. Master Card accounted for an additional 27 percent of issued cards, while Discover accounted for slightly over 7 percent of all credit cards.
Nearly 200 million Americans owned a credit card in 2014, claims the Statistic Brain Research Institute. These 200 million people owned an average of 3.75 credit cards each and collectively owned 1.9 billion cards.
As of 2015, Americans had a total of $890.9 billion in credit card debt, an average of $15,706 in debt per U.S. household, according to Nerd Wallet.
