Orthopaedic surgeons perform hip resurfacing procedures, explains the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. During hip resurfacing, a surgeon implants a metal socket in a patient’s hip through an incision, states Emory Healthcare.

Doctors perform total hip resurfacing on patients who experience repeated pain in their hip because of arthritis or any other hip condition, explains Emory Healthcare. It is an alternative to total hip replacement, and involves trimming and capping of the femoral head with a smooth metal covering, instead of removing the entire femoral bone, states the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. As of 2015, research suggests that hip resurfacing may be easier to revise than total hip replacement.
