Although Senokot is an over-the-counter medication, it should be taken as directed by a doctor, according to Drugs.com. It is normally taken at bedtime, and can be taken with or without food. Common Senokot side effects include abdominal discomfort, cramping, nausea or diarrhea.
Overuse of Senokot or other laxatives can negatively affect the normal bowel functions of the body, warns Drugs.com. Patients should not use Senokot for more than a week without checking with a physician.
