A monarchy is the type of government ruled by a king or queen. Monarchies are usually kept within a family and people are born to rule.
Most monarchs are born into their positions and rule until they die or are deposed for some reason. England is an example of a monarchy.
There are different types of monarchies. An absolute monarchy is when a king or queen has few legal restraints and can do whatever he or she wants. A constitutional monarchy is a form of government where a ruler's power is limited. A hereditary monarchy works by an office being handed down to the next generation, and an elective monarchy involves an election to select future rulers.
