Outdoor staircases may be built of teak, ipe or mahogany, as these three types of hardwood are water, insect and weather resistant. Such hardwoods resist fluctuations in humidity and heat, can withstand heavy traffic over several years and only need to be resealed occasionally to maintain their beauty.
The high oil content in teak makes it extremely resistant to water and mildew growth. Also, teak offers little movement and does not shrink with time. Moreover, upon aging, teak acquires a pleasant grey color. Both teak and mahogany are available in different grains and colors. Ipe is also resistant to insects and is less expensive than teak.
