The volcano Popocatépetl produces magma that is primarily andesite mixed with some dacite as of the current eruption cycle including 2015. This active stratovolcano, the second tallest peak in Mexico, has erupted primarily andesitic magma for most of its history.
Since the 1519 arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in Mexico, Popocatépetl has erupted over 15 times. The most recent eruption began on Jan. 9, 2005, and continues nearly nine years later as of January 2015. Explosions and emissions of gas and water vapor generally continue to cover the crater at the summit of the volcano. The area around the volcano continues to be under an alert for a major eruption.
