Chefs generally use olive oil in the preparation of pasta with oil and garlic (known originally in Italian as aglio et olio). The dish often includes additional ingredients such as parsley and lemon zest.
To make spaghetti with oil and garlic, the Food Network recommends heating a mixture of three cloves of minced garlic, 1/2 cup of olive oil and a pinch of red pepper flakes for eight minutes. Then combine the mixture with 1 pound of cooked spaghetti and 1/4 cup of the water used to cook the spaghetti. Top with 2 tablespoons of chopped flat-leaf parsley, the zest of half a lemon and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese to taste.
