What type of show is "The F.B.I." series?

Most shows portraying members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation — including the 1965 television series, titled simply "The F.B.I."— are best described as police procedurals. Procedurals are a sub-genre of the mystery/crime genre of dramatic fiction.

The G-men of the FBI have been portrayed in many different kinds of police procedural television shows in the last fifty years. A lot of these shows focus on a particular type of investigation. These include everything from the behavioral analysts of "Criminal Minds" and the forensic anthropologists of "Bones" to the agents who examine unexplained phenomena on "The X-Files," "Fringe" and "Twin Peaks."
