Laki is both a mountain and a volcanic fissure. It erupted on June 8, 1783 and continued until February 1784, causing a devastating impact on the living beings and surrounding environment. The mountain was not completely breached by the fissure and only had small craters with lava.
The eruption of Laki stunted the growth of plants and crops in Iceland, leading to the death of most of the island's livestock and causing a famine that killed one-fifth of its population. It caused a temperature decrease of 1 degree Celsius for the entire northern hemisphere. The resultant haze covered most of continental Europe and could be seen all the way from Syria.
