What types of animals burrow in the ground?
By Forinfos - 22/02/2026 - 0 comments
Many different animals dig burrows, including badgers, groundhogs, prairie dogs and burrowing owls. Some animals spend their entire lives in burrows, while others only burrow to give birth or lay eggs.
It is easy to find animal burrows on the ground, but it may not be as easy to identify which animal made the hole. Armadillos make more of a groove-type burrow than a large hole. Chipmunks dig burrows that are about the width of a silver dollar. Kangaroo rats dig burrows in dry, sandy soil that are about 3 inches long and 2 to 3 inches deep. If you find holes on your property and you live near water, a crayfish will burrow in a hole about 2 inches wide.
