What types of animals live in the abyssal zone?

The abyssal zone is home to a number of animals such as the deep-sea anglerfish, the black swallower and the giant squid. Generally, larger creatures that are able to withstand the pressure of the ocean's depths live in the abyssal zone.

The abyssal zone is an area of the ocean that is between 13,123 and 19,685 feet deep at its lowest point. Its name comes from the Greek word "abyss" which means "bottomless." The area never receives daylight and is perpetually dark. Creatures of the region scoop their food from the bottom of the ocean, and can withstand stable temperatures of around 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
