There are three major types of human memory: sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory. A human memory is an information fragment that is encoded in the brain, stored and then recalled.
Sensory memory is an automatic response that can observe and memorize a perceived item less than one second after the item is perceived. Sensory memory is further broken down into three types: iconic memory, echoic memory and haptic memory.
Short-term memory can temporarily store and retrieve information for 10 seconds to one minute. Long-term memory stores and retrieves information for long periods of time and is maintained in the brain by prions. Long-term memory is subdivided into explicit memory and implicit memory. Explicit memory is the conscious act of memorizing, and implicit memory is the unconscious act of remembering information.
