Nurses, doctors, firefighters and security guards are some jobs that often have 24-hour shift rotations. Nurses and doctors who work in hospitals may be required to cover the entire 24-hour period without rest, although this practice is becoming less popular due to safety concerns.
Some security guards are expected to work a 24-hour shift split between active duty and on-call time. For example, the guard may work 16 hours on patrol and then be required to remain on call for another eight hours at home. Firefighters are also scheduled for 24-hour shifts that include on-call time. Firefighters who are on call typically sleep in the firehouse during their shift.
