Some of the largest breeds of dog in the world include the Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound, Newfoundland and Great Pyrenees. St. Bernards are another of the world's largest breeds of dog.

Great Danes, first recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1887, are the largest breed of dog. As of 2015, Zeus, a Great Dane who stands 44 inches tall at the shoulder, holds the world record for largest dog. Another large breed, the Great Pyrenees, once protected sheep on the slopes of the Pyrenees Mountains. Although Irish Wolfhounds are lightweight, they are among the tallest breeds of dogs.
