What types of medical professionals interpret EKG strips?

Doctors interpret the results from electrocardiogram, or EKG, strips, according to WebMD. This includes family medicine physicians, internists, cardiologists and surgeons. The spikes and dips of the EKG strip display the electrical activity of the heart, which doctors use to determine how a patient's heart is functioning.

An EKG strip shows a normal tracing when the heart is beating at a regular rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute, states WebMD. An abnormal EKG tracing occurs when the heart beats too slow or too fast, or the patient has an irregular heartbeat. Along with EKG testing, doctors consider information from a physical exam, medical history and other tests to get a clearer picture of the heart's function.
