The form fee and the biometric services fee are the two payments required to file for a green card, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Most applicants between 14 years old and 78 years old must pay the biometric services fee.

The biometric services fee covers collecting fingerprints and conducting a criminal background check with the FBI, explains Family Green Card Service.

The dollar amount associated with each fee varies depending on the applicant's age and immigration category as listed on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services site. For instance, refugees do not pay these fees, while other immigrants pay a form fee of up to $985 and a biometric services fee of $85 as of 2015.
