What are the key requirements for renewing your green card?

The key requirement to renew a green card is being a permanent resident whose 10-year green card is about to expire or has expired, says the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. As of 2015, green card renewal applications can be filed by paper or online with form I-90.
While permanent resident status does not have an expiration date, green cards expire every 10 years and need to be renewed, notes Immigration Direct. Permanent residents that don’t renew their green card may have trouble seeking employment and traveling internationally. If the renewal application is denied, applicants can have their case reopened or reconsidered by the office that denied them, says the USCIS.
