Common examples of personal protective equipment include goggles, gloves, and hard hats or helmets. What workers need to wear as PPE differs based upon the hazards faced in a particular work space. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration sets PPE standards for many different fields.

PPE comprises a diverse range of protective clothes and personal items for working with hazardous materials. What constitutes PPE in one work area is not necessarily appropriate for another. For example, in a university laboratory teaching basic procedures to beginner students, plastic safety goggles and lab coats may be sufficient PPE. In a workshop that performs arc welding, heavy-duty helmets, respirators and flame resistant clothes are required. At a construction site, PPE involves hard hats, slip-resistant shoes with safety toes, and ear plugs.
