The typical dosage of ibuprofen for mild to moderate pain is 200 to 400 milligrams by mouth every four to six hours for pain in adults, according to Drugs.com. Doses greater than 400 milligrams have not been proven to have an enhanced effect.

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain reliever that is used to treat fever, headache and generalized pain, notes Drugs.com. It is also recommended for use in treating pain related to dysmenorrhea, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. For most conditions, a maximum of 3,200 milligrams per day is recommended.

People with severe hepatic or liver disease should not take ibuprofen, warns Drugs.com. The smallest effective dose of the drug should always be used.
