The nomadic Karankawa Indian tribes lived as hunter-gatherers, consuming fish, clams oysters and turtles from the swamps, marshlands and Gulf of Mexico waters. The tribes supplemented their diets with various animals and plants as they migrated seasonally between the Texas Gulf coast and the barrier islands.

The Karankawa people enjoyed abundant hunting between Galveston Bay and Corpus Christi Bay, taking ducks, turkeys, alligators and deer found in or near the rivers. According to the season, Karankawa tribes' food staples also included small game, such as rabbits. They gathered blackberries in the spring and summer, and also searched for edible roots, moving from place to place as dictated by food supplies.
