Typical responsibilities for cashiers include ringing up items, greeting customers, answering customer questions, handling returns and exchanges, and providing customers with proper change. Cashiers also count down their registers at the beginning and end of their shifts. Cashiers working in stores that sell alcohol also check customer IDs.

Additional responsibilities for cashiers may include general janitorial tasks, such as mopping, emptying trashcans and sweeping. Some cashiers may be tasked with restocking shelves and pricing items. Industries in which cashiers are often employed include department stores, grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants. A majority of time is spend standing and walking, and the work is often repetitive on a day-to-day basis.
