In May 2013, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that umpires, referees and other sports officials have a yearly average income of $37,170. The salaries of different college football referees vary depending on the region, their years of experience and the size of the school.
Some cities in the United States pay their college football referees more than other cities do. The same is true with the schools. Usually, larger school districts have bigger budgets and thus are able to afford giving higher salaries. College football referees start out at the high school level until they qualify for the college games, which pay better.
