The typical weight of a St. Bernard is between 110 and 200 pounds. The dog stands between 25.5 and 27.5 inches high at the shoulder. Like many large dogs, the St. Bernard isn't long-lived and only lives between 8 and 10 years.
The St. Bernard was first bred in the 10th century by St. Bernard de Menthon in Switzerland. It was famous as a rescue dog that helped travelers stranded or trapped by avalanches in the mountains.
St. Bernards can come in both smooth-haired and rough-haired forms, but the coat is always dense. Dogs of this breed have muscular necks, deep chests, large feet and a benevolent disposition.
