According to the official website of the United States Senate, Senator Robert C. Byrd was the longest-serving American Senator as of 2015. His length of service was 51 years, 5 months and 26 days. He was Senator from January 3, 1959, to June 28, 2010.
Senator Byrd represented the people of West Virginia. The positions he assumed in the Senate included Democratic whip from 1971 to 1977, Majority Leader from 1977 to 1980 and 1987 to 1988, Minority Leader from 1981 to 1986 and President pro tempore from 1989 to 1995, June 6, 2001 to January 3, 2003 and 2007 to June 28, 2010. He also served for a time as chair for the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
