United Way of America, which is now known as United Way Worldwide, is a non-profit organization that operates out of Alexandria, Virginia, by fundraising for and supporting community organizations. The organization collaborates with government agencies, businesses, organized labor, financial institutions and the religious community, among others.
United Way was originally founded in 1887 in Denver by local public servants and philanthropists who saw a need for coordination and increased funding for local charities. The organization has grown to serve more than 1,800 communities in 40 countries and has partnered with valuable allies such as the National Football League and Music Television.
