What is an upwarped mountain?

An upwarped mountain is a mountain formed from force created by heat or magma pushing up directly under the Earth's crust. The force lifts the layers of rock in the Earth's crust above ground level.

Upwarped mountains form when a wide area of land is pushed up by heat-created pressure. They are typically dome-shaped, with all sides sloping evenly, when they are first formed. Over time, erosion from weather and water flow wear away portions of the mountain, changing its shape. Old upwarped mountains are often craggy, with many jagged edges from erosion. The Adirondack Mountains in New York are an example of upwarped mountains.
