USAA stands for United States Automobile Association. Originally offering only car insurance, the company now offers competitive financial products and services to members of the U.S. Military and their families. As of 2014, some investment products and services are also available to the general public.
The USAA was founded in 1922 by a group of U.S. Army officers who decided to insure each other's vehicles. Applicable banking services offered by the USAA are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. The company uses a direct marketing model that utilizes employees, rather than agents, conducting business with clients, often over the telephone. USAA is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
