To use kitchen cabinets as an island, install a toe-kick box, then install two cabinets on top of the box. You need two pre-assembled 24-inch by 30-inch base cabinets, a 39-inch by 73-inch counter top and four 1-inch by 4-inch boards. Attach the doors after the installation.
- Outline the area
Decide where you want to install the island. Mark the area with a 24-inch wide by 60-inch long rectangle to outline the base.
- Make a toe-kick box
Use four 1-inch by 4-inch wooden boards to construct a 21-inch wide by 54-inch long toe-kick box. Cut the boards to length, and drill them together with screws.
- Install the toe-kick box
Center the toe-kick box in the base outline. Install the box with L-shaped brackets by drilling the screws into the grout lines on the floor.
- Install the first cabinet
Align the first cabinet on top of the toe-kick box so that the cabinet lines up with the original marks. Screw the cabinet into place.
- Install the second cabinet
Install the second cabinet beside the first, and then screw the cabinets together.
- Install the countertop
Place the countertop on top of the cabinets so there is a 1 1/2-inch overhang above the doors. Use 1 5/8-inch screws to attach the top of the cabinets to the bottom of the countertop.
