The requirements for using a store reward cards differ, according to Consumer Reports. Some cards offer rewards for simply shopping at the store, while others require that you sign up for a credit or debit card.

For example, the Kroger's Plus card awards shoppers points for purchases, which they redeem for discounts on gas, Kroger explains. Simply scan the card at the fuel pump or enter your ID to redeem the rewards.

Some programs, such as JC Penny's JCP Rewards, require that you spend a certain amount of money within a certain period of time to earn rewards, states Consumer Reports. Others, such as the Target REDcard, have no spending requirement. Simply use the card to pay for purchases and receive a 5 percent discount on the amount you spent.
