Some useful methods for removing efflorescence include using a garden hose to wash down the affected area, power washing and sand blasting. When using a garden hose, follow up by scraping the efflorescence off with a stiff, non-metallic bristle brush or heavy scraper. Acids can also remove efflorescence.
Before washing away efflorescence, the worker needs to make sure that there is no danger of the water freezing. Therefore, it is best to remove efflorescence when the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Repair or repoint any cracks in the masonry before the job begins.
Workers should take care when power washing or sand blasting, as these processes have the potential to damage mortar.
