When was the USMC founded?

The United States Marine Corps was founded on Nov. 10, 1775. The USMC was officially established by a resolution drafted and approved by the Continental Congress. The resolution asked for the formation of two battalions of Marines to aid in the fight for independence on both land and sea.

Major Samuel Nicholas was appointed 1st Commandant and immediately began recruiting on the streets of Philadelphia. Tun Tavern owner Robert Mullan was one of Nicholas' first recruits and, as a result, Tun Tavern is known as the birthplace of the Marine Corps in U.S. military lore. The United States Marine Corps birthday ball is celebrated every November 10 to commemorate the founding date of the USMC.
